Free Theme: WP NewsMag

Featured, Our Themes

WP NewsMag Free WordPress Theme by www.wp-magazine.seThe Conceditor WP NewsMag is my fith free theme for the WordPress Community to use as see fit (it´s the same theme that we use for WP Magazine). Modify it, change it, colorize it — do what you like, but keep the copyright information in the footer intact. Other than that — enjoy!

PS! An extended commercial version will be available in the near future.

A Few Words About WP NewsMag

You do not have to use any plugins in order to get WP NewsMag up and running. On the other hand, you may want to enhance the theme further by the use of plugins. Feel free to experiment.

Features

WP NewsMag is not just another WordPress theme — it´s more to it than meet the eye. Read here:

  • Fully widgetized with five custom sidebars
  • 100% CSS — easy to customize the look and feel to suite your needs
  • Hybrid blog/portfolio/photo/magazine style theme
  • 5 different front page category loops
  • Slider function for bottombar and featured articles
  • Three level CSS/JS dropdown menu
  • Utilization of Custom Fields for neat image display on the front page
  • Built in image transparency for linked images
  • Lot more…

Enjoy!

Installation

1. Get yourself a copy of WordPress 2.5.1 (or later) and install it.

2. Change the category id:s for the front page to reflect your categories (it´s done in the index-php file).

You´re finished.

Using Custom Fields

For the front page loop images in the five featured sections (categories) WP NewsMag uses Custom Fields. The key should be set to “Image” (without the citation characters and with a capital “I”) for the larger images and “Small” for the smaller images and the value is simply the name of your image.

Like this: Key: Image and Value: name-of-image.jpg. (Key: “Small” for the smaller ones.)

The pictures should be uploaded to the folder “featured” in the WP NewsMag template folder. If you want your images elsewhere you need to change the paths in each of the five featured boxes in the index.php file. Find this:

bloginfo(’template_url’); ?>/featured/

and change to whatever place you like on your server.

Different browsers

The WP NewsMag theme has been developed for Firefox. It should work just fine on Opera, Netscape and Safari. Explorer has no known issues so the theme should work just fine even on IE 6. But, feel free to report bugs as well as solutions here. Creds will go into the stylesheet file.

Good luck and enjoy!

  2. Tom Heuving from Zuid-Holland, Netherlands on June 2 2008

I’m awaiting the paid version as well ;)

I filled up my site using the free template. When the commercial one is launched I’ll replace the free one with the paid version :)

I will be adding IE8 compability as soon as there´s a full working IE8 out there. And I do not mean the buggy first release.

The commercial version will be released in a few months time. Right now I am working on two big projects (gotta earn my living somehow) and that puts a real strain on the time I have to spare on my free WP projects.

  4. Hello Peter, very nice theme. Great work.

I am translating ur theme to german. i made some little code changes, and i need a little changing for better homepage visualabity:

how to change the code, that the hp section “Featured News” is open, and not closed on entering the page ?

  5. me again sry 4 posting again … peter there is a little bug in the header. if u install wp in a subfolder, the header search must be go to “index.php” and not to “/index.php” … !

    i love ur theme !

@ollip2k: Thank you, I try my best to provide the community with slick WP designs. (Dein Homepage sieht ja gut aus!). What code changes did you make?

For the JavaScript open/close thing, you micht consider changing to MOO.FX instead and start all over. I will no longer support questions on the old JS version since the commercial version of WP NewsMag will run with MOO.FX.

  7. What code changes did you make?
cut off a line or two in the header news section, arrange some css divs with the height for 2liners, because some divs overlap another.
places images copyright as “alt” and link “alt” tags wiht the wp-title option.

now i am in office … and i saw here with ie6 an awful layout … because the sidebar is not on the right side, its under the main div on the right side of the page. i mean the direction right, not right ? … xd!

the commercial version is already out ? … tell me the price and i will think about it to buy, or beta test! i am an oldskool webber since 1993 and worked with tables :( … but now with this wordpress stuff, i will try to make some themes with css.

  8. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

@ollip2: Well done. Yep, the files do need some cleaning. Oh, I do not ever code for IE6, but I might consider doing so in the future. Hopefully it´ll be enough to optimize for IE7 and 8 in the near future.

No, the commercial version is not out yet — it´ll take som time before it´s ripe and due for release. Besides, I am working on two large WP projects for a media group right now, so there´s hardly time for sleep, let alone for creating free themes.

Keep me updated on your work with the site using my theme. It´ll be the imbaimba.de, right?

  9. for IE7 its looks very nice … didnt found any layout errors – and yeah the site using ur theme is imbaimba.de … but this is a fun project too, and i think it will be take some time, to translate the theme. … but if i am done, i will inform u.

    my best regards

  10. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

There is not so very much to translate in the theme. I am also thinking of providing the themes in english AND german from the beginning on.

(Vielleicht werde ich zukünftig auch schon vom Anfang an die Themes ins Deutsche übersetzen.)

  11. Just a quick thank you for a great theme. Got it working nicely now – still tinkering about with it – but it is more than functional.

    Many thanks once again

    Toby

  12. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

@Toby: Your site looks nice. Though, you might want to keep the layers (DIV’s) intact as you modify the theme. That way the bottom layers won´t spread away as they have done for you. Keep up the good work.

  13. I was searching for some good Wp themes and saw your post . You have nice theme . I have also collected few ones and hope you will like them too . Free Wordpress Magazine Themes

  14. Good work . Thanks

  15. Hello, I’m Sophie! ^_~

A great WP theme by the way. I have one problem that I have such problem getting resolved with this theme (T_T).

How can I get rid of the dotted border around the post content images? The dotted borders in content images does not show in FireFox but they show in IE browser. This is the only problem I have so far so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you so much!!! d^^b

  16. Sophie from North Carolina, United States on June 2 2008

I’ve posted a question yesterday and saw that is already DELETED. All I wanted is some help with the dotted boder boxes. I just don’t understand… I must have offended someone. I LOVE the theme but it’s too bad that my question was trashed like it was nothing. Quite a disappointment on the assistance with such a great theme.

    Thanks anyway.

  17. Sophie from North Carolina, United States on June 2 2008

Ooops! I’m so SORRY!!! Now I see my previous comment! My bad, it was my fault to assume that you wouldn’t want to help me and deleted the post. I’m sorry again.

So, can you please help me with the “dotted border” issue? I love this feature but it displays “empty dotted boxes in the content post” each time I put affiliate code. These dotted boxes only show in IE . What can I do to get rid of this dotted border boxes around the content images?

Your help is greatly appreciated. LOVE the theme & I’ll tell my bloggie friends about your awesome themes!

  18. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

@Sophie: I do NOT delete any comments except for spam. But I rarely do have time to respond immediately. I hope you can appreciate that.

You need to create a new class in the stylesheet file (style.css) for your new affiliate code. Put a div around your new code and create a class (for instance class=”affiliate”) and then apply the property border: none; to the new class in your stylesheet file.

Otherwise everything within the content area of a post uses the default content class which do contain dotted borders for images.

    Good luck.

  21. Hej,

  22. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

Tommy…

  23. i am having massive problems:

    1. I cannot get my images to show on the ‘latest featured articles’ section..
dont know what im doing wrong, but when i upload pics… i have tried changing everything but still no avail…

  24. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

Salim: There seem to be some strange things going on in the image path:

    /test/wp-content/themes/wp-newsmag?%3E/featured/508581524_2e9aaf5237_o.jpg

Please note the > ?%3E < just behind the “wp-newsmag”. You need to check the index.php file for possible typos in the code that you may have done during your editing.

  25. HI!

  28. HI Peter is me… again :)

I was wanting to edit my drop down slider tab things but wanted to make sure exactly what js files are for these.

  29. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

Silvia… I had a look at your site (which by the way is a beatiful modification of the NewsMag theme, check it out here: http://hide.fattoreq.com/) but I cannot see why it is not working. Maybe you should try a fresh install after backing up your stylesheet file. WP NewsMag works fine on all known browsers as far as I know.

Eric… Gosh, I don’t remember. I´ll try to find out. Sorry, man.

  30. HAHA its ok, i would google it but i dont even know what to call it.

  31. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

Slider tab menu function? What about that Eric? Or maybe you should google for the names of the js files? ;-)

  32. thanks

  33. its very good theme

  34. thanks man.maybe ı can use this theme my new site.

  35. sorry no with dorp down menu, but with section more future articles…

  36. Thanks admin.

  37. Frank from South Carolina, United States on June 2 2008

The URL for “The Dark Side of WP NewsMag” has a double http: (i.e. “httphttp://”).

  38. Great. The best free offering blog.

  39. Hey!
    Great theme, thanks for that.
But I’m having problems with the images for the dropdown “read more feature articles section”. All I get is the “copyright…”-thing, not the image. The articles are there though. I’ve followed your instructions for the other images (key and name of image), any clues what might be wrong?

  40. This is the most fantastic theme ever. I absolutely love it. I am hoping someone could help me figure out how to list the archives in alphabetical order instead of date posted.

  41. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

@isbjoernen: Did you set chmod 777 on the CAHCE folder?
@Living Provident: Check out the tutorials on WordPress.org.

  42. Thanks for your help, but…I’m very sorry, but what am I looking for, and where? It might be useful to say that my blog isn’t hosted by me, but on a remote server?
There’s nothing in any of the .php or .css files that can be changed to fix this?
I’m not very advanced in this, I’m afraid.
Annoying thing was that this problem appeared with the larger photos at the top first too, but then I realised I had typed something wrong. I fixed that, and it worked, with those photos. But now I’m just lost…still.

  43. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

@isbjoernen: The CACHE folder is in the templates folder. This needs to be set to CHMOD 777. But probably you already have done this if the bigger images are showing up correctly. It is impossible for me to pinpoint the error unless I have access to the server and all the modified files. And unfortunately my time schedule does not allow me to provide deeper support than answering questions here.

By looking at the source of your index page via Firefox, I noticed that images aren’t looped out at all. Did you upload images to the articles? And did you set the correct category ID in the index.php for that section?

  44. All fixed now, thank you very much.

I discovered what was wrong through going over the index.php file again. Not quite the category ID, but it helped, also gave me some clues on other things to fix, colours etc. So thanks again!

  45. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

Glad that it worked out for you.

  46. Anthony from New York, United States on June 2 2008

Hi, can anyone tell me where there are directions to changing the themes header image and for using the sections and have the pictures show? I read what was stated above but it did not give any detail. Thanks

  47. Peter From from Ostergotlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

@Anthony: Open up the logo.jpg in Photoshop and create your own logotype. Save the new logo over th old one. FTP it to the images folder within the themes folder. Done. For the images on the front — read about custom fields above.

  48. Hi Peter,

this it a wonderful theme. Maybe i will use it in the near future.
Do you have special conditions for the premium version for NPOs ?

  49. Peter From from Sodermanlands Lan, Sweden on June 2 2008

Thanx Bowenkämper… No, no special conditions for Non-Profit-Organizations…
